How to Quiet My Compound Bow

Compound bows fire with extreme force and the string makes a twang sound after the shot. The twang causes animals to duck in some instances and will spook the animal if the arrow misses. Silencing the bow allows a clean and quiet shot and a potential second chance if you miss. Several simple tools are used to silence the bow without any negative effects on the performance of the string and limbs.

Things You'll Need

  • Stabilizer bar
  • String suppressor
  • String separator
  • String leech
  • Serving thread
  • Felt cloth
  • Limb dampeners
  • Hex wrench

Instructions

Add a stabilizer bar to the front of the bow. Locate the threaded hole immediately below the grip. Insert the threaded male end on the bar and screw the bar in a clockwise direction. The stabilizer absorbs and releases vibrations to the help silence the bow.

Mount a string suppressor on the bow. Insert the male threads on the stabilizer bar through the hole in the suppressor mounting bracket. Screw the stabilizer in place to tighten and hold the bracket. Insert the suppressor arm through the hole in the bracket and push the rubber stop against the string. Tighten the arm in the bracket with a hex wrench.

Split the top half of the bowstring with a string separator and insert a rubber string leech. Remove the separator to tighten the string on the groove in the center of the leech. Add a short section of serving thread to each side of the leech. The wrapped serving thread prevents the string separation from spreading.

Add a thin layer of felt cloth to the hard surfaces on the arrow shelf. The arrow will make noise as it slides over the shelf. The thin layer of fabric silences the arrow without affecting performance.

Install a rubber dampener to each end of the limbs. Several brands produce dampeners to absorb heavy vibrations and silence the limbs.
