How to Make a Custom Grip for My Bow

Modern compound bows incorporate removable hand grips to provide traction and comfort to your hand while gripping the bow. However, if you do not have an "average" shaped hand, the factory made handle may not be comfortable for you. Customizing your bow and replacing the handle is a good place to start. With a little epoxy putty and some time and patience, you can shape your very own customized bow grip.

      Firmly grip your bow with your hand, and make note of any sections of the handle that need to be reduced. These will be parts of the factory grip that will need to be removed for comfort.

      Reduce the areas found in Step 1 using a round file and some coarse grit sandpaper. Be careful not to remove so much of the factory grip as to wear all the way through it, as this may lead to cracks.

      Clean the factory handle of any sawdust, plastic or oil by rubbing it down with a little rubbing alcohol. This will also help the epoxy to adhere to the handle.

      Remove the epoxy paste from its packaging and smash, knead and roll the outer hardener layer with the inner resin. Once mixed you will only have a few minutes to set it until it permanently hardens. Rinse it with water to make epoxy more flexible. Heat from the chemical reaction produced when combining the two materials will let you know when it is ready to be applied.

      Apply the paste over the handle evenly, ensuring as much contact between it and the handle as possible. Form the putty to the shape of your dominant hand. Allow for the formation of the finger grooves and contours of your hand. This will create a perfect mold of your hand; make sure it is as comfortable as you want it to be.

      Set the bow down and allow a few hours for the epoxy to harden and cure completely.

      Sand the new grip smooth if you like, using some fine grit sand paper to remove the contour lines of your finger and hand print.
