How to Shorten the Length a Bow String

In the sport of archery, especially with recurve bows, it is essential that the string be the correct length for the bow. If the string is too short it could damage the bow, and if too long, will not be effective. If a string is too short, not much can be done to extend it, but if too long, shortening it to appropriate length is definitely possible. Usually, bowstrings are matched to bows, but occasionally stretching may occur and fine adjustments need to be made to achieve optimum levels of string tension.

Instructions

    • 1

String the bow using the existing string that is too long. If the string is so long as to not apply any tension, skip this step.

    • 2

Measure and mark the length the string needs to be shortened. A good starting point is that the string should measure between eight and ten inches from the hand rest.

    • 3

Remove the string from the bow and tie an overhand knot at the mark you made when measuring. Make sure your new knot has an eye that is big enough to just fit over the bow stave.

String the bow again and check the tension. Draw the string back and check that the draw length is appropriate. If small amounts of extra tension need to be applied, de-string the bow and twist the string several times before restringing, this will slightly reduce the length of the string, but is not suitable for large adjustments.
