How to Loosen Tension on a Compound Bow

Each compound bow has a number of design elements that are specific to the brand and model of that bow. However, nearly all bows can be tightened or loosened in the same manner. While not strictly necessary, having the user's manual for the bow available is helpful as the proper tool size can most often be found in the section about adjusting draw weight.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the limb bolts located at the ends of the upper and lower limbs.

    • 2

Check for lock-down screws that prevent the limb bolts from moving. If lock-down screws are present, remove them so the limb bolts may be adjusted.

    • 3

Determine the correct size Allen wrench needed to adjust the limb bolts. Do this by testing each wrench in turn until the proper fit is found or refer to the owner's manual for the bow.

    • 4

Use the Allen wrench to loosen the limb bolt by turning it in a counterclockwise direction. It is important to loosen the upper and lower limb bolts the same amount or the bow can be thrown out of tune.

    • 5

Tighten the lock-down screws, if present, so the limb bolts will not move out of their new position.
