How to Nock a Compound Bow

Nocks on a bow help the archer correctly place the nock of the arrow onto the bowstring. It is essential that the arrow be set in the correct place on the string to line up with the arrow rest, so a small brass marker is often permanently incorporated onto the string to allow for the continuous accurate placement of the arrow onto the string. If your compound bow's nock has come loose, or did not come with one installed, you can add one in a few steps.

      Align one side of your carpenter's square with the bowstring. Point the other side directly at the section of the arrow rest where the arrow applies downward pressure.

      Mark this location on the bowstring using a marker.

      Measure 3/16 to 1/2 an inch (depending on arrow gauge) above this mark. Crimp the nock onto the bowstring lightly using the pliers.

      Take a few test shots at a safe target. Watch the way the arrow flies. It it wobbles up and down through the air as it flies,you will need to readjust the nock position. The nock should be in line and slightly above the arrow rest and not in the dead center of the string.

      Make a few more test shots. Once you have obtained even flight with your arrows, permanently crimp the brass nock ring onto the string by applying more force, but not so much that you damage or cut any of the strands in the bowstring itself.
