How to Remove the String From a Compound Bow

Removing the string from a compound bow is only possible with a bow press. The string is tightly attached to each of the limbs and the tension prevents all other removal techniques. Cutting the string and creating a sudden release of tension is the only option other than the bow press but you risk damaging the limbs. Removing the string is necessary for string replacement and repairs to the axles and cams. Removing the string also relieves tension for the installation of accessories.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the bow in a double pull style bow press. Lock the bow press clamps on each side of the bow and turn the crank until the string relaxes. Only add a slight amount of pressure to relax the string.

    • 2

Follow the bowstring to the top axle. The string winds around the axle until it meets a peg on the side of the axle. Pull the loop off of the peg.

    • 3

Grab the loop and unwind it from the axle. Frayed bowstrings may stick in the groove and require a slight tug.

    • 4

Pull the string off the bow until you reach the bottom axle. Pull the string around the axle to remove it from the majority of the bow.

    • 5

Return to the peg at the top axle. Remove the final string loop to completely separate the string from the bow.
