How to Aim a Longbow for Beginners

Compared to the dimensions of the recreational hunting bow, the longbow features elongated limbs. The limbs of the longbow help to increase the velocity of the arrow, leading to longer shots. While certain compound hunting bows are equipped with advanced laser sights and specialized strings, the longbow generally features a traditional design. According to Cambridgeshire Archery, beginners can use a simple mark on the bow, such as a rubber band, to determine the appropriate height of the bow while aiming at a target.

Instructions

Remove the string from your longbow. Wrap a rubber band around the upper limb of your longbow about 4 inches above the handle. Reattach your string to practice your shooting technique.

    • 2

Wrap your non-dominant hand around the molded grip of the longbow. Hold the longbow in a horizontal position with the limbs parallel to the ground. Align the butt of an arrow around the string of the longbow.

    • 3

Lower the arrow shaft onto the arrow rest located at the apex of the grip. Rotate the bow to a vertical position to begin the aiming technique. Point the tip of your loaded arrow in the direction of the designated target.

Adjust the height of the bow until the rubber band on the upper limb sits level with the center of the target. Pull back the bow string slowly with the middle and forefinger of your dominant hand. Extend your fingers forward to release the arrow.
