How to Be a Better Shot With a Bow

Archery is a skill that has been developed over thousands of years. Many of the ancient techniques are still applied today. The biggest challenge in improving technique lies in the power of bows, as they tend to be difficult to draw. This requires mastering mainly the skills of aiming, drawing, maintaining proper stance and breathing.

Adopt an open stance. In order to shoot effectively with a bow, you must adjust your stance to one that is comfortable for you. Try using what is known as an open stance. With both feet planted parallel to each other, move your non-dominant foot slightly forward. Your non-dominant foot is your foot that is not closest to the direction the bow is pointing in. By positioning your non-dominant foot slightly farther forward than the other foot, you will gain balance and not sway so easily if it is windy.

Breathe calmly and steadily. A key to being a good archer is to breathe steadily. Do not take gasps of air and do not breathe quickly. Be conscious of your breathing and take deep, slow breaths. This will steady your nerves and your hands and will allow you to aim more accurately.

Hold the bow correctly. This is important, as it dictates how steady the bow is while it is fully drawn. A fully drawn bow is tiring on your upper body muscles, so holding the bow correctly will alleviate some of this pressure. The handle of the bow must be held between the thumb and the index finger. The index finger can wrap around the handle if you wish, but do not grasp the handle firmly. The key is to maintain a loose grip and let the bow rest in the palm of your hand.

Draw the string correctly. This is also important for improving your technique. Make sure to keep the fingers you are drawing the string with loose also. Do not firmly clasp your fingers around the string but keep them loose so that the string can be released easily and without obstruction.
