How to Release the Bowstring With a Finger Tab

In archery, finger tabs are small leather or kevlar covers that fit onto the tips of your fingers and reduce bruising. When used properly they do not impede the bowstring release during your shots. Finger tabs are frequently used because they are good barriers to finger injury. Proper release directs the arrow to the intended target and assists with accuracy. Whether using finger tabs or not, the release is the same.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the fore- and king finger, in the finger tabs, over the bowstring at the arrow notch. Take your shooting stance with your non-dominant foot forward.

    • 2

Pull the bowstring back so your hand and fingers are at your chin. The finger tabs where the arrows rests should be just under your chin as you look down and target your shot.

    • 3

Visualize the target and make a mental picture of moving your fingers back from the string. Breath in.

    • 4

Exhale and lift your finger tab-clad fingers off the bowstring, letting it release forward. Bring the bow down to your side and watch the arrow and where it hits the target.
