How to Fit an Archery Release

Archery is one of the oldest sports around today, but many sophisticated devices are available to assist today's archery enthusiasts. Archery releases, for example, allow for more precise string release by keeping the string stationary until a trigger mechanism is pressed. String release by hand can be affected by slight movements of the fingers, decreasing accuracy. In order for an archery release to work at its best, it must first be properly fitted to the archer.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the proper size archery release. Sizing varies between companies, but archery releases are generally manufactured according to glove size and labeled in sizes small to extra-large. Choose the archery release size closest to your glove size.

    • 2

Slide the archery release onto your wrist. Some releases wrap around the wrist with the release mechanism extending into the palm; others wrap around the wrist and hand with a hole cut out for the thumb.

    • 3

Tighten down the wrist strap so the release is firmly attached but feels comfortable and does not impede circulation. Archery release straps generally use hook-and-loop fasteners.

    • 4

Tighten down the strap over the hand portion of the archery release. The strap must be tight enough to firmly secure the release, but not so tight as to impede finger movement.

    • 5

Insert any mechanical parts into the release. Some archery releases have built-in trigger mechanisms; others have trigger mechanisms that insert into the release after it has been fitted.

    • 6

Practice drawing and firing a bow using the archery release at a safe archery range. The release should not impede your drawing technique and should allow for precise string release.

    • 7

Adjust the fit of the archery release by adjusting the straps until the desired fit is achieved.
