Proper Bow Release Length

Making the perfect shot requires a great deal of skill, practice and knowledge. Proper bow release length, or draw length, affects an archer's shot dramatically, influencing both aim and power.
  1. Defining "Proper Length"

    • The proper bow release length simply refers to the length at which the archer feels most comfortable and aims most accurately. Using calculated average lengths often works, especially for beginning archers, but some prefer a trial-and-error method.

    Average Lengths

    • Calculated average release lengths can depend on several factors, but archers can usually determine the correct length by their heights. A 5'0" archer averages a draw length of 24", and a 5'5" archer averages a draw length of 26". The draw length generally increases by 2" for every 5" of height. A 6'3" archer would have a draw length of 30".

    Importance

    • A proper release length allows an archer to establish an anchor point while maximizing power. Shortened lengths prevent the establishment of an anchor point, making consistent, well-aimed shots less likely. Lengths drawn too long generally add tension to the release and may even cause the string to snap against the archer's arm.
