1
Measure the bracing height with a bracing height gauge resembling a miniature "T" square. There are two hooks on the top edge of the "T" that fit over the bowstring. Measure the distance between the deepest point of the bow handle to the center of the string. This must be somewhere between the manufacturer's recommended minimum and maximum bracing height.

2
Unstring the bow and slide the top loop of the bowstring down the limb. Remove the string from the lower string groove. Untwist the string completely, and then apply five twists---clockwise if you shoot right-handed, and counterclockwise if you're a lefty. Restring the bow and check the bracing height. If it's below the manufacturers minimum, unstring the bow and add more twists to the string. Restring the bow and measure. Repeat until you achieve the minimum bracing height.

3
Shoot six arrows at a close range to check bow performance. If the bow vibrates on release and is noisy, add another five twists and try again. Somewhere between the bow maker's minimum and maximum, you will find a sweet spot. At this setting, the bow sounds just right on release. It's quiet, and there is no vibration. Make a note of this bracing height.

4
Unstring the bow after the practice session or tournament. If you use a longbow, leave the string on the bow to prevent it from unwinding. Slide the loop of the bowstring down the top limb and leave the bottom loop on the end groove, secured with a rubber band. Remove the string and use a wire reinforced plastic tie to hold the bowstring loops together if the bow is fitted with takedown limbs.

5
Adjust the string to the ideal bracing height every time you shoot.
