Arranging Court For Tournament

The first and most important thing you will need is a badminton court, if you have your personal court which is decent enough( wooden or synthetic court) than go for it but using a marble or cemented court is not a wise choice when you are arranging tournament so I would suggest if wooden or synthetic and also remember the spacing because if more than 100 players participates you will be needing extra space so that it can easily handle the crowd,

But if you have one or two court with a little to no space on the sides where audience or other player can sit then I would probably suggest you to rent a court. If it is a club tournament go for it but it will not be suitable for open event.

Start Looking in your area for badminton court which is decent, contact academies which are running.

One special tip which will help you to get a court in cheap rate by asking schools for renting there courts ,Because schools and colleges are much more likely to agree at low rate as most of the players are students which is opportunity for them to get more admission.

So to sum up these are the things you should be looking into while selecting your venue.

First is the quality as I said earlier if it is a wooden and synthetic Court it will attract more players to participate.

Also keep in mind height of the court so that while playing shuttle will not touch the ceiling.

Second is space which is available , look for badminton halls which have minimum 3 court as it will help you to run tournament more fluently specially when you are arranging different categories for boys and girls ,

Also keep in mind space for your audience , where they will be sitting and all that.

Third thing to look is where it is situated you don’t want a court which is far away from the city, your objective should be to get a venue which is as easy as possible for your players to reach.

I remember participating in a tournament where stadium was like 10 kilometer away from main city so we had to walk 1 kilometer from main road to reach Academy now they also arranged some jeeps for transportation but it will only add into your expense if you are having much more budget then go for it.

Entry Fees and Prize money

So now you have decided where you are tournament is going to be arranged next step is to decide how much entry fees you are gonna take from each player to enter into tournament now the number may vary according to your location but while deciding this keep in mind the expenses that you are one incurred the level of court and facility you are providing two players and the margin you want to have,

Collection of entry fees can be done in two ways

Offline, where you ask participant to deposit their money by hand before the deadline along with their name and other information like in which category they are playing birth certificate if they are not open category player.

Online, now if you are in India then yogems is a great site to use they will handle all the transaction for you so you can focus on other important things but if you are outside the country than try to find site which provide these kind of services.

Coming to prize money, I can confidently is saying that this is the main thing that encourage a player to participate in a tournament

Set a prize money according to your objective like if you want more experience player to participate then high prize money is a good option if not then keep it low.

But most importantly don’t try to create a surprise element saying that the winner will get a special prize because then it creates high expectation in players mind and if your prize is lower then there expectation than they might not participate in your tournament again

Arrangement of Shuttles and Officials

Most of the people have this question in their mind that how much shuttle will I need to buy for arranging a tournament, well it depends on number of things like

How to Organize a Badminton Tournament

How many categories your having

if it is a small tournament there are two categories one is for men’s and other is for women’s then the number of shuttle required will be lower in comparison to a tournament where all the categories like under 13 under 15 etc are there.

Also singles and lower age player will need less shuttle compared to doubles and adult

What level of players are coming

It is a fact that less experienced player most probably will not ask for a shuttle change as often in comparison to an experience player, So keep that in mind.

Which type of shuttle you are using

if only nylon shuttle are used then in my opinion 15 boxes will do the work where as for feather shuttles you consumption will range 50-60 boxes.

Try to contact with dealers who sell shuttles in your city and ask them if they want to sponsor your tournament( which will help you in reducing shuttles expenses )if you have a pretty good deal for them then they will hardly put down your offer.

One tip to reduce consumption of your shuttle in the early around instead of 21 points arrange match 15 points match up to quarter final after than go for 21 points best of three set.

Officials for tournament

You will be needing officials like chair umpire, service umpire and line judge for each court during a tournament, now for line judge you can ask your academy player, but for service Umpire and Chair umpire look for people who have solid knowledge about rules of badminton so that when an argument arise during match they can easily solve it.

So how many officials are required in a single court?

  • 1 Chair Umpire
  • 1 Service Umpire(he will also changes the shuttle when the player ask)
  • 2/4/6 Line judge depending upon how professional you want your tournament to look.

Rules and Regulation in Badminton match

It is too much of a broad topic so I will not be going into details Just going to tell you some basic things which you need to know, if you want more information regarding this topic then you can read this article.

  • Match is of 21 points, Best of 3

Refreshment and Accommodation for participant

Providing snacks and drinks will be in high demand so make your arrangement accordingly, some organizer charge these separately where other include it in there entry fees.

Providing accommodation to player is a personal preference if your arranging tournament on a large scale then tying up with a hotel is a good idea.

Setting up Schedule

How to Organize a Badminton Tournament

In advance, make sure that court time is allocated according to the game length and no more. Someone will need to be given the task on the day of ensuring that each player is adhering to its allocated court time.

Preparing a time table beforehand is a great practice and also avoid any last minute problems.
