Progrip Techniques
-
History
-
Progrip was designed by former baseball player and long-time coach Eugene Bleecker. He realized that the fundamental problem with most baseball players' swings is that they have swung wrong for so many years that improper form has become habit. So he developed the Progrip, which is a grip placed on a bat to fix bad grip and develop proper form.
Operation
-
The Progrip is ridged, creating naturally contoured placed for the batter's hands and fingers to rest. Batters simply follow the grip that Progrip designs and swing while holding the bat this way, rather than in other ways that can (and do) lead to less powerful and missed swings.
Grip
-
A proper grip is where the bat is held in the fingers, rather than the palms. Holding the bat this way ensures longer extension, and that more power from the shoulders and arms will flow into the swing itself. The Progrip creates muscle memory for this proper grip so player will maintain a proper grip over time.
Supplemental Tools
-
Use of the Progrip is just one thing that players can do. Bleecker recommends players follow the eight steps he has put together for correcting the most common problems faced on the field. Stepping "in the bucket" (off to the outside of the pitch), proper swing length and of course grip are all listed in this bigger, overarching system for creating the perfect swing.
