Bat Waterproofing Techniques

Water Resistant Sprays
-
Water resistant or repellent sprays are chemical-based solutions. They are often used on clothing and footwear. The sprays are inexpensive and easy to apply. The waterproofing effect can last up to one year when sprayed on wooden or metal bats. Revivex offers water repellents sprays that can be found in most sporting good stores and online. Always use sprays in a well-ventilated area. The fumes can be harmful to your respiratory system.
Beeswax
-
A beeswax mixture application is a temporary waterproofing solution for wooden bats. Beeswax is naturally water resistant. It has proved to be a good water repellent for military gear and ship hulls. Many health food and herbal stores offer beeswax. It can also be purchased online. Melt a mixture of beeswax, resin or rosin (found at music stores) and vegetable oil in a pan over heat. Apply the mixture onto the bat with a rag. Allow to set overnight before rubbing the bat down. The waterproofing will last about 90 days until another application is required.
Silicone Sealants
-
Silicone sealants are also chemical-based waterproofing agents. They are available for purchase in both toxic and non-toxic forms. The chemical solution is longer lasting than the natural remedies and can be sprayed, brushed or dipped on the surface of wooden or metal bats. The effect will last about one year. GE offers silicone sealants that are found at home improvement stores. Always use caution when working with chemical product and follow the directions for use.
Flax Seed Oil
-
Flax seed oil is another natural waterproofing agent. It comes from the flax plant and has been used to waterproof tarps, military packs and kitchen table oilcloths. You can find flax seed oil in herbal stores and health food stores and departments. Flax seed oil becomes water resistant after being boiled. The waterproofing effect lasts about six months after you brush boiled flax seed oil onto the surface of a wooden or metal bat. Apply, allow to set 30 minutes and then wipe excess oil off of the bat. Ensure that the bat is thoroughly dry before handling for use.
