The Proper Way to Block a Pitch

Baseball catchers are presented with the difficult task of blocking pitches on a regular basis. Wild pitches and planned low pitches will hit the ground and catcher must block and contain the ball to prevent the runners from advancing. Blocking the pitch requires a combination of reflex, quickness and technique. The overall process is simple but the actual execution can be a difficult athletic motion. Successful catchers practice blocking pitches on a regular basis to train their muscle memory before the game.

Instructions

    • 1

Assume a squatting catcher's stance as the pitcher prepares for the windup. Raise your backside above your heels to prepare for quick pitch-blocking motions.

    • 2

Watch the ball as it leaves the pitcher's hand and determine its trajectory as soon as possible. This requires practice and good vision.

    • 3

Make a motion in the direction of the pitch as soon as you've predicted its direction. Push off with one leg and take a short step in the toward the path of the pitch.

    • 4

Drop to both knees, sliding in front of the ball as it hits the ground. Keep your shoulders square to the pitcher and lean slightly forward to block the ball in front of you. Use your glove to block the gap between your legs.

    • 5

Grab the loose ball with your hand and spring to your feet to check or throw out the runners.
