The Best Way to Catch a Ball

There are a variety of sports that involve balls and in most of them, it is important to be able to catch the ball. Examples include baseball, basketball and football. While the balls used in each sport are different, the basics of catching are similar in each. In all cases, catch the ball away from your body and grip it firmly so you do not drop it.

      Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.

      Track the ball with your eyes as it travels toward you. Maintain visual contact with it the entire time.

      Place your gloved hand in front of your chest to catch a baseball, with your arm slightly bent. When catching a basketball or football, hold your hands at chest level in front of your body so they are open and ready to receive the ball. Your arms should be bent slightly.

      Move your hands to the spot in front of your body that the ball will arrive.

      Grip the ball tightly as it enters your hand or hands, but don't bring your hands to your body.
