The Best Way to Clean a Bowling Ball

It is important to clean a bowling ball regularly so that you do not lose the reactive quality of the ball. A ball, especially one with a reactive coating such as resin, will pick up oil and dirt from the lane. This will soak into the coating and diminish the ability of the ball to react in the way it is intended to do. Depending on the lane conditions, you may need to clean your ball less or more often. A good rule of thumb is to clean the ball every nine to 12 games.
  1. Cleaning Product

    • There are many specially designed cleaners for bowling balls. You should know the type of coverstock that is on your ball and purchase a cleaning product that is specifically designed for it. Most cleaning products are available in spray bottles. Spray the ball completely to begin.

    The Cloth

    • You do not want to use a cloth that is going to shed particles back onto your ball. Use an oil-free terry towel. After spraying the ball with cleaner, wipe in small circles until the cleaner is dry. Repeat this process two or three times. It is best to have a different cloth for each round of cleaning. The cloths will become oily quickly and you do not want to introduce that oil back to the ball.

    Maintenance

    • A thorough cleaning will restore the finish to your ball and you should regain the reactive properties. In between full cleanings, it is recommended that you wipe the excess oil off of the ball after each shot. Simply keep a towel handy to wipe the ball before each throw.
