The Best Way to Kick a Ball

The best way to kick a soccer ball is going to vary from one situation to the next. A goal kick, for instance, is suited only for getting the ball a great distance down the field. In most other situations it's an impractical kick. The most versatile kicking method on a soccer field is the "sweet spot" kick, which uses the bone located just above the big toe to provide power and control.

Approach the ball from a few steps back and from a slight angle. If you're kicking with your right foot, you want to be slightly off to the left of the ball.

    • 2

As you approach the ball your left foot should plant directly beside the ball, not in front or behind it. With your leg drawn back and ready to kick, your knee should be over the ball, which will provide you the ideal amount of power.

Swing to strike the ball. At this point, you want your foot to be at a bit of angle and not straight up and down. The impact should be on the bone just above your big toe. You want to think about cupping the ball with your foot. In praticing by yourself, try to aim for the net or wall so that the ball is easily retrieved.

After you make contact with the ball it's important to follow through with your kicking leg.

Try adjusting the angle of your body so that you are less over top of the ball and more behind it. Similarly, try leaning to the side, away from the ball. Adjusting the angle of your body in relation to the ball like this will create different variations on the flight of the ball that can be useful in different circumstances.
