What is the Proper Way to Kick a Soccer Ball?

Power and precision when kicking a soccer ball are best accomplished by training to achieve the proper form. A new player often starts out by kicking with his toe---"toe bashing" the ball. This reduces control and accuracy. These kickers are less effective than those who properly line up for a pass or shot on target, which could provide a winning goal.

Pick a smooth, even field or ground area. Position the ball so that it is stationary and does not have the opportunity to roll away.

    • 2

Position your pivot foot. The placement of your pivot foot---the foot you are not using to kick with---is vital. Your pivot foot should land within an inch of the ball's side as you are making your approach. The ankle of the pivot foot should align with the midpoint on the side of the ball.

    • 3

Come down on the ball with your kicking leg. When coming down, leaning back or forward determines the eventual air height of the ball. Leaning over the ball will keep the shot low to the ground. Leaning back, on the other hand, will add height to the shot.

Strike the ball. When striking the ball, your kicking foot's toe should point downward toward the ground. The kicking foot should make contact with the center area of the ball. It is ideal to strike the ball with the area of your foot above your big toe and just to the side of your arch. If you are right-footed, it will be to the right side of your arch; if you are left-footed, it will be to the left side of your arch.

Follow through. As you follow through, it is imperative that you plant your pivot foot while your kicking leg continues soaring forward. Curving or twisting your kicking foot on the follow-through will result in an inaccurate shot.

Add power. To do so, transfer your weight to your shooting foot so that your weight lands on your shooting leg upon completion of your follow-through.
