How to Kick a Long Ball

Many soccer coaches advocate playing a short passing game in order to maintain possession of the ball on offense. Short passing is generally seen as better, more skillful soccer. Spain's 2010 World Cup winning team, for example, was famous for its short passing plays. But, sometimes, the nature of a game or the conditions can make a long ball a better option. Short passes are more difficult to connect on bumpy pitches with poor surfaces, and long passes can be especially effective if the wind is blowing in your favor.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the ball under control and get clear of any nearby opposing players.

    • 2

Look up and pick out a teammate who is not being "marked," or covered by an opponent, or find a space that a teammate could run to in order to chase the ball down.

    • 3

Position yourself just behind the ball, with your arms out for balance and leaning back slightly.

    • 4

Swing your foot right through the ball, following through as hard as you can, to give the ball as much lift and power as possible.

    • 5

Follow the ball up the pitch. If your team retains possession you can join the attack, but if the opposition wins the ball you will need to get back on defense and help regain possession.
