How to Create Backspin When Pitching

Creating a backspin on a ball while pitching makes the ball travel across the field faster. Backspin describes the rotation of the ball, from top-to-bottom, as it crosses the field. According to Corraro Baseball, a major league pitcher can rotate, or backspin a ball an average 36 times in a single pitch. To create a backspin when pitching, you need to minimize the friction placed on the ball. Friction slows the pitch and disrupts the backspin.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the baseball in your hand so the horseshoe hem is facing your palm. Place your middle and index fingers on the perpendicular seam. Make sure there is a large gap between your palm and the ball to prevent friction.

    • 2

Place your thumb on the other side of the ball, and rest it on the leather not the seam.

    • 3

Grip the ball softly like an egg.

    • 4

Wind your arm back for the pitch. Flick or snap your wrist to release the pitch. If there is little friction, the ball will backspin as it leaves your hand.
