1
Pull the old grip tape off of your bat. If it is old and starting to fall off, peeling it away from the bat handle should be easy. If it is a thicker tape, you may need to use a pair of sharp scissors to cut it.
-
2
Dampen a clean rag with rubbing alcohol and wipe down the handle of the bat. This will help to remove any adhesive, dirt or other debris that may cause your new grip to bubble or wrinkle.
-
3
Research different types of grip tape and buy it from a sporting goods store. There are many types of grip tape. Some offer more moisture absorption, which might be good if you don't use a batting glove. Others have a tacky feel that reduces the chance of your hands slipping off during your swing.
-
4
Stabilize your bat on a flat surface. Place the bat head on the ground and use your feet to hold it in place, or place it in a vice if you have one.
-
5
Begin to wrap the tape around the bat handle, starting at the bottom. Start the tape as close to the butt end of the bat as possible. One thing that may provide a better grip for you is to wrap more tape around the lower end of the bat so it's thicker.
-
6
Wrap the tape around the bat handle, moving slowly. Slightly overlap the tape with each pass around the handle, being mindful to not create wrinkles or bubbles. If that happens, pull the tape back and try making that pass again.
-
7
Once the grip tape has reached your desired length on the bat handle, cut the excess tape off. A decent distance is 10 to 12 inches from the base of the bat.
-
8
Secure the grip tape to the bat handle with the piece of finishing tape that came with the grip. If you don't get a piece of finishing tape with the grip you buy, you can use a thin piece of electrical tape. Just make a couple of passes around the handle with the electrical tape to ensure it's secure.
