How to Put in Bat Tape

There is more than one type of bat tape available. Visit your local sports equipment store and choose the bat tape that you feel is the most appropriate for your needs. Taping a bat handle can prevent sweat, which can improve swing control. Batters can also tape their bats with specific colors or patterns, which makes it easier to quickly identify and grab their bat, when it is one of many.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all tape that is currently on the bat. You may need to use a utility knife or a box cutter to remove it easily.

    • 2

Spread goo remover over the sticky portions on the bat, where the tape previously was. Products such as Goo-B-Gone can be used for this purpose and purchased at your local home improvement store. You can alternatively use rubbing alcohol on a clean cloth, though it requires a bit more elbow grease.

    • 3

Wipe the bat clean with a dry cloth.

    • 4

Position and hold the bat between your knees. Position the butt of the handle, so that the butt is pointing toward you and you can easily spin the bat, as you wrap the tape.

    • 5

Unroll some of the tape and make an angled cut with the scissors. Align the angled cut with the bottom of the handle, directly above the knob.

    • 6

Wrap the tape, spiralling it down, around the bat, unrolling it around as you roll. Hold the tape with one hand and roll the bat around with the other, overlapping the tape about 1/4 of an inch. Hold the tape tight, ensuring not to wrinkle it as you wrap the bat. If you receive a wrinkle in the tape, unwrap that section and begin again. Do not wrap with a wrinkle in the tape.

    • 7

Refrain from wrapping when you reach your desired stopping place for the tape. Cut a five inch tail of tape. Continue wrapping it around the bat, overlapping the previous wrap 1/4 of an inch.

    • 8

Practice swinging with the bat to test the grip. Add more tape layers, if the grip feels too thin or loose. Too much tape will cause the grip to throw the bat off balance.
