How to Increase Throwing Velocity for Expert Position

When you're throwing a ball, whether you're a baseball pitcher, a football quarterback or tossing in any other sport, your velocity and power are key to getting the ball where it needs to go. However, to increase that velocity you need to train your entire body to work together as a unified whole, so that you can deliver the most power at the highest speed you can manage. Fortunately, doing that is easier than it sounds.

Practice proper throwing mechanics. When you're throwing a baseball for instance, it's roughly half and half between your core muscles and your arm muscles as to where your power comes from. So when throwing, you need to incorporate both the throwing motion of the arm, as well as the turn of the hips, the roll of the shoulders and the clenching of your stomach and chest muscles. Once you have the proper form down, you should notice more power behind your throws.

Strengthen your core muscle group. Exercises such as planks, crunches, side lifts and similar others will help you work your core muscles found in your trunk. Combined with strength training for your shoulders and arms, you can increase velocity by increasing the available power in your muscles.

Practice throwing at your top velocity. Just as jogging won't increase your sprint speed as well as sprinting will, throwing at less than your hardest won't do you as much good as throwing as hard as you can. The more your body gets used to throwing properly and at full power, the more speed you'll be able to get out of your throws.
