How to Catch Pop-Ups and Pop Flys in Little League

In baseball, catching a pop fly or pop-up is performed when a batter gets underneath a pitch and drives the ball high in the air. A fielder gets underneath the ball and catches it as it comes down. Catching a pop fly involves good hand-eye coordination and focus. Learning to catch a pop fly properly is an important part of fielding technique, which is taught to young players in Little League. The only difference between a pop-up and a pop fly is that the term "pop-up" is usually used when the ball does not travel past the infield.

Instructions

    • 1

Track the ball as it is hit high into the air. Keep your eye on the ball all the way as you move to catch it.

    • 2

Position your body under the falling baseball. This will allow you to make last-moment adjustments to the path of the ball.

    • 3

Lift your baseball glove above your head and slightly off to the side. This allows you to have a clear view of the ball. Position your glove so the basket is facing upwards towards the ball.

    • 4

Bend your elbow on your glove side to soften the impact of the ball hitting your glove. This also bring the glove closer to your eyes to aid in viewing the trajectory of the ball.

    • 5

Position your throwing hand behind the basket of the glove to provide extra support. This also expedites transferring the ball to your throwing hand after the catch is made.

    • 6

When the ball hits the glove, close the glove smoothly to secure the ball into the glove.
