How to Help a Son From Backing Out at Home Plate

Your son may have a tendency to back out at home plate, meaning he may step away from the plate when a pitcher delivers the ball. This stems from fear. As a father, you should try to help your son become a better baseball player and stick in there at the plate. You can use a few methods to ease your son's mind and keep him in the batter's box. If he remains afraid, perhaps you can suggest a different sport.

Instructions

Watch professional baseball games. Show your son proper role models in the form of Major League Baseball players. These players routinely stay at the plate while pitchers throw pitches topping 100 miles per hour. Your son can begin to emulate his sporting heroes by watching them confidently stay at the plate.

Practice with your son. Have him stand at the plate and go out to the pitchers box. At first, your son doesn't even need to swing at pitches. Throw them over the plate and have him practice just standing there and not being scared. You can also work with your son at a batting cage, where machine-thrown balls will consistently cross the center of the plate, rather than hitting him.

Encourage him. Don't ever yell or criticize your son. Simply tell him it's OK and to try to stand in there next time. Over time, he will begin to have less fear and stay in position at the plate.
