How to Pick a T-Ball or Little League Bat

Choosing the "perfect" bat for your baseball-playing child can be an overwhelming activity. Sports stores are full of bats made by several different manufacturers with different sizes, weights and materials available. A good bat will not make a player better, but a bat that is not suitable can definitely create a obstacle, especially for the younger players in T-Ball and Little League baseball.

Instructions

Obtain a list of your league's equipment rules. Some leagues have restrictions on bat size or material, which is important to take into account when shopping for a bat.

    • 2

Find a selection of bats that are the right size for your child. For T-Ball and Little League, a bat diameter of 2 1/4 inches is appropriate. The length of a T-Ball bat should be around 25 to 27 inches, and 28 to 32 inches for Little League.

Allow your child to test out the bats and take a few practice swings. An effective way to test if the bat is too heavy is to have your child hold the bat with his dominant hand straight out at his side. He should be able to hold the bat in this position for 20 seconds. If he can't, then the bat is too heavy. A lighter bat will be easier for a younger player to use.
