How to Repair Stitching on a Baseball Glove

When the knot holding together the stitching on your baseball glove comes loose, you simply have to pull the laces tight and retie them; however, when the stitching lace rips, you will need to replace the entire lace. Several sporting good stores sell replacement lacing for baseball gloves, and you can get replacement laces in virtually any color. While several different types and brands of baseball gloves exist, each with their own slightly different stitching patterns, the basic process of re-lacing a baseball glove is roughly the same for any type of glove.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean your baseball glove with leather conditioner. Not only will this make your glove look nicer, it also will soften the leather, making it easier to work with.

    • 2

Rub a bit of leather conditioner on the new laces to loosen them up.

    • 3

Examine the stitching patterns on your glove and memorize them. Different gloves have slightly different stitching patterns, so inspecting your glove is the best way to make sure you know the proper lacing patterns.

    • 4

Remove one section of the lacing on your baseball glove. You may need to cut the stitching with scissors. Needle-nose pliers will be useful if you are removing the lace on an old glove and the laces are stiff. Pay attention to the path the lace follows as you pull it out of the glove.

    • 5

Tie an overhead knot at one end of a long piece of replacement lace. Tighten the knot before proceeding.

    • 6

Cut and narrow the opposite end of the replacement lace so that it fits with the lacing needle. Leave enough of the replacement lace to fully lace the section of glove you are working on.

    • 7

Thread the lace through the empty holes exactly as the old lace was threaded. Although a lacing needle will help you do this neatly and simply, you can thread the new lace with your fingers and needle-nose pliers.

    • 8

Pull the lacing until it is tight once it is completely threaded. Test the tightness of the stitching by wearing the glove.

    • 9

Tie a snug square knot at the loose end of the replacement lace. Tie this knot as close to the glove as possible.

    • 10

Repeat this process for any remaining laces that need repaired.
