How to Dress Like a Baseball Umpire

Baseball umpires are expected to be dressed a certain way when they are working a game. In most leagues, the umpires will dress alike, whether they are on the bases or behind home plate. This creates consistency among the crew members and projects a professional appearance. Dressing like a baseball umpire may require you to purchase some new clothes, because the gear that umpires wear is made specifically for baseball.

Pick a proper shirt. According to Lester's Upstate Sports, most amateur umpires wear a powder-blue shirt with the appropriate crest on the left arm. In professional baseball leagues, umpires wear a three-button, navy blue and red pullover shirt. Umpires also may wear a light blue or red pullover shirt because they are cooler in warm weather.

Decide on gray or blue pants. Umpires can wear either color, but they need to be neatly pressed and long. Umpire pants are made of polyester and come in an athletic cut to ensure comfort during the game. Do not look for alternatives to proper umpire pants, as the official model is the only one that will look neat and pressed all day long.

Choose your accessories. Umpires should have a wide black belt. The belt should not have a flashy buckle or engraving. The socks should be black, thick and comfortable. A coat, sweater or turtleneck is also worn by some umpires in cold weather.
