How to Add Padding to a Catcher's Mitt

Catcher's mitts are used by baseball catchers day in and day out to catch pitches that can easily exceed 90 miles per hour. The extremely high speeds of these pitches can easily damage the bones and blood vessels in the catcher's hand, making proper padding essential for every catcher's mitt. Luckily, padding can be added to any catcher's mitt to protect the catcher's hand from high-velocity fastballs.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a catcher's mitt sponge pad that fits your size catcher's mitt. Prostyle, Markwort and All Star are a few of the brands that produce catcher's mitt sponge pads. Alternately, you may cut a piece of open cell poly foam that is the size of your hand from the bottom of your palm to the first knuckle on each of your fingers.

Squeeze the sponge or foam to collapse it and insert it into the catcher's mitt. Insert the pad so that it spreads out evenly inside of the mitt and so that the padding for the lower part of the fingers is at the top of the mitt.

Insert your hand into the catcher's mitt to ensure that the foam covers the palm of the hand completely up to the first knuckle of each finger.
