Decide the length of cage and the type of material you will use for the frame. Cages range in size from 10 to 70 feet long, depending on the desired activity and the space available. Frames can be constructed with galvanized steel poles, wood or pvc piping. In any case, the frame should be able to support the weight of the net and withstand weather conditions for your area.

Build the floor of the cage in a level area that drains well. The floor can be compact dirt, grass, gravel or concrete. When deciding the location and layout of the cage, consideration should be given to the angle of the sun and the proximity to lights and a power source for use of a pitching machine.

Construct the batting cage frame by cementing poles in the ground or by placing in a ground sleeve. The poles need to be anchored securely to support the weight of the net. Most cages are 12 to 14 foot wide and about 12 foot tall. The number of support poles needed depends on the length of the cage.
