How to Make Ball Field Drag Mats

A smooth baseball infield starts with soil that is free of stones and debris. The soil must also have the proper consistency in order to pack properly without getting hard The infield should be maintained regularly and groomed after each game. Fields should be dragged on a regular basis. Drag mats can be made easily and with minimal cost.

Things You'll Need

  • Chain-link fence 6 feet square
  • Chains
  • Metal "L" beam, 6 feet long
  • Drill
  • Bolts
  • Nuts
  • Washers
  • Wrench
  • Closed eye bolt

Instructions

      Acquire a section of chain link fence 6 feet wide by 6 feet long.

      Drill five or more holes in the metal "L" beam. Space the holes apart proportionately.

      Attach the "L" beam to the fence using a bolt, nut and large washers. Insert bolts from the bottom up. The washers should be large enough so the nut does not slip on the bolt.

      Drill two holes in the front of the "L" beam on each end.

      Attach two closed eye bolts to the "L" beam with nuts and washers.

      Attach a 6-foot chain to each closed eye bolt.

      Locate the center of the chain and attach a chain connector
