How to Shoot a Basket

One of the most versatile shots that basketball players can learn is the jump shot. Shooting the shot at the basket involves jumping straight up and using your arm and wrist to propel the ball toward the hoop. Basketball players can shoot jump shots from nearly any spot on the court, from almost right underneath the rim to half-court or beyond. They also can shoot jump shots from a stationary position, or can run forward, stop quickly and shoot before a defender has time to react.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your feet shoulder-width apart, with your shoulders facing the basketball hoop.

    • 2

Balance the ball on the pads of your shooting-hand fingers. Stabilize the ball by placing your other hand on the side of the ball.

    • 3

Raise your hands so the ball is just above your head. Bend your shooting arm so it makes a 90-degree angle under the ball.

    • 4

Jump into the air. As you move upward, extend your shooting arm up and toward the basket.

    • 5

Snap the wrist of your shooting arm at the top of the jump. You want the ball to roll off of your fingertips and make an arc as it travels toward the basket. Allow your wrist to continue its downward movement, even after you release the ball. By the time you reach the ground, the tips of your fingers should face the ground.
