How to Score 3 Pointers
Instructions
-
-
1
Get open by losing your defender. Typically this happens when the point guard penetrates the defense and the defenders collapse on the guard. The point guard will be able to pass to the shooter.
-
2
Set up in shooting position with both feet behind the 3-point line and square to the basket.
-
3
Bend your knees for more power for your shot. It should look like you are sitting on a high bench stool. The further you are from the basket, the more you'll need to bend your knees.
-
4
Square up your body so you are in line with the basket. Make sure your feet, knees, hips, shoulders and head are all in line and facing the basket. Do not lean while trying to shoot a 3-pointer.
-
5
Place hands approximately 8 to 10 inches apart with palms facing the passer. Catch the ball.
-
6
Put your right hand directly behind the ball and your left hand on the side of the ball if you're right-handed. If you are left-handed, your left hand will be behind the ball with your right hand on the side.
-
7
Tuck in the elbow of your shooting arm. The ball should be in front of your face with the top of the ball below your eyes.
-
8
Jump from the slightly crouched position. At the top of your jump, extend the shooting hand to guide the ball toward the basket.
-
9
Finish the shot with the shooting wrist angled toward the basket and the other hand still positioned to the side of where the ball was.
-
10
Practice 3s a lot, if possible with a friend or coach so you will have someone to rebound for you and look at your form to see that you're shooting correctly.
