How to Get a Better Jump Shot Without a Hoop

Training in basketball can be a bigger challenge without a hoop, but you can improve your skill. A jump shot is one of the most common shots in basketball, and is often done from outside the three-point line to increase the ball momentum. The shot is also used within the three-point line to ensure that your shot gets over the block of a defender. Though you don't have a hoop, it is beneficial to aim your shot in the same direction each time.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the foot that is on the same side as your shooting hand approximately 1 foot in front of you. Move your feet shoulder width apart.

    • 2

Position your hands so one is supporting the bottom of the ball, just above your forehead, and the other hand supporting the ball at the side. The one at the bottom will generate the momentum and is usually your strongest hand.

    • 3

Bend your knees and jump. Flick the wrist of the hand that is supporting the bottom of the ball toward a target when you are in the air. When you flick, ensure that your fingertips are the last part of your hand that touches the ball. This will create a noticeable backspin.

    • 4

Launch both feet into the air at the same time. Complete the movement in a fluid motion.

    • 5

Bend your knees when you land to cushion your descent. The wider your stance when you jump, the better your positioning will be when you come down.
