Good Moves to Use in a Basketball Game

Success on the basketball court lies with the ability to perform certain offensive and defensive maneuvers effectively and consistently. Performing moves will create openings and exploit the weaknesses in the opponent's defense. There are a variety of moves you can perform all over the court to help support your team and gain the upper hand.
  1. Faking

    • Fake shots can work wonders when attacking from the perimeter. Successful fakes can open shots and create both passing lanes and open drives to the hoop. Fakes have to look real to fool the defender, meaning you have to lean into the move. Looking in the direction of the fake, good footwork and keeping your knees bent will all help create a good fake. Good ball control and quickness is important to take advantage of the opening created by the fake.

    Jump Hook Shot

    • The jump hook shot is useful when you are being defended down low, near the basket. This shot requires good balance and and a quick release. Your baseline foot should act as a pivot as your other foot steps into the baseline, pointing toward the sideline. Take a short dribble up and have your non-shooting shoulder pointing toward the basket. When your non-pivot foot lands swing into the lane with your pivot foot and jump off both feet, bringing the ball up to your side and releasing with full arm extension.

    V Cut

    • A cut is used to create openings and get your team spaced out evenly. As there is a lot of movement going on, this is not always easy, but the "V" cut can help you shake a defender and create an opening. Slowly move into the focal position of the V-shaped move and then push off your cutting foot as hard as possible to complete the cut while moving faster to get away from the defender. Have your hands up and ready to catch a pass.

    Drive

    • The direct drive move is used to push past a defender and get a basket. This is not a faking maneuver as there should already be an open lane for you to move into. Acceleration is key here. Your first step should be long and quick, forcing your way past the defender. Keep your head up and dribble the ball in.
