How to Improve Three-pointers

Three-point shooting is one of the most vital parts of basketball strategy. When it comes to opening up a lead or registering a comeback, the three-point shot is valuable. If a team has one or two consistent three-point shooters, it can take control of a game and allow everyone to play a more relaxed and confident game. Shooting three-pointers consistently requires you to practice and concentrate every day. You also must use the proper form every time you release the ball.

Instructions

    • 1

Get open on the basketball court. Even the best shooters struggle when an opponent is right in their face and they go up for a jump shot. When the defender is close on a three-point shot, it is almost impossible to make this shot on a regular basis. Work on your moves, head fakes and jab steps to buy a half-second and get open for your three-point attempt.

    • 2

Position your left foot slightly in front of your right foot (for a right-handed shooter) when you are taking a jump shot. This will allow you to rise up for your jumper in a balanced manner.

    • 3

Place your fingertips under the center of the basketball and space them as widely as the ball. Make sure that the ball rests on the fingertips and does not sit on the palm of your hand.

    • 4

Bring your shooting hand to the top of your forehead and make sure your non-shooting hand is guiding the ball to that spot.

    • 5

Snap your right wrist to release the ball and send it toward the basket. You should be concentrating on a spot just past the front rim when you release the ball. Your middle finger should be pointing right at the spot where you want it to go after your release the ball.
