The Height of Basketball Hoops

As a sport that is played internationally, basketball follows a uniform measurement regulation with regard to the height of each hoop. Both the National Basketball Association and the International Basketball Federation measure the height of the hoop from the same location.
  1. American Dimensions

    • In the United States, basketball hoops must conform to the measurement of 10 feet in height, which is measured from the base of the floor to the top-edge of the rim. In some youth leagues, modified rules may permit shorter hoop installations.

    International Dimensions

    • FIBA basketball rules require a measurement of 3,050 millimeters from floor to rim. However, an error allowance of plus or minus five millimeters is permitted.

    Height of Backboard

    • NBA rules require basketball backboard to measure three-and-a-half feet in height, while international rules mandate a measurement of 1,050 millimeters. International rules also allow a maximum of an additional 20 millimeters in height.

    Adjustable Hoops

    • Many youth leagues begin play around eight feet. The advantage of a lower hoop is that it allows children to develop proper shooting form, rather than pick up poor habits in an effort to hoist the ball toward the hoop. Most adjustable hoops range in increments of six inches from 7.5 feet to 10 feet. According to the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM), basketball hoops below 7.5 feet in height produce dangerous conditions, specifically in regard to dental injuries. Thus, few manufacturers sell hoops with settings for lower than 7.5 feet.
