Basketball Regulations on Rim Height
-
Rim Height
-
The standard height for a rim off the ground is 10 feet. This rim is often mounted on fiberglass backboards in the professional level, but on home version, a wooden backboard is often found. There are many arenas which still use a glass type backboard, but they can often shatter with the speed of a slam dunk and the weight of a player hanging on the rim.
Backboard Height
-
The backboard that the rim is attached too is a standard six feet by 3 ½ feet in size. This allows the rim to sit in the lower middle the board, while allowing plenty of board space for the player to use to bounce or “bank” the ball into the basket. The strength of the board is determined by its construction materials which can be wood, fiberglass, metal or glass. Backboards are hung with the top edge having a height of 13.5 feet with the basketball rim hanging at precisely 10 feet.
Rule Uniformity
-
The 10-foot height requirement for the rim is standard uniformity in both foreign and domestic basketball leagues. Although any league can set their goals at whatever height they wish, the 10-foot rule is the standard and is widely used among all leagues in various federations.
Rim Size
-
The standard size of a regulation basketball rim is 18 inches in diameter. The rim is usually painted orange and has a looped net that is strung through several notches places under the rim. These nets are made of nylon and often provide a snap or popping sound when the ball hits the basket at the right speed and goes in.
