Basketball Rim & Net Installation

1
Check any paperwork that came with your original basketball hoop. For example, if you purchased a portable basketball hoop system or any hoop that came with a backboard and rim, the manufacturer might require you to use a specific type of replacement rim.
-
2
Measure the existing backboard's bolt holes to determine the type of rim you need to purchase. If you are replacing a rim and have the existing one, you can measure its base. Standard basketball rims are 18 inches in diameter but the size of rim bases can vary. Measure beforehand to avoid the need to drill new holes in your backboard.
-
3
Purchase a rim, which will generally come with installation instructions and bolts. A steel rim usually includes four bolts that need to be attached to the pre-drilled holes in your backboard. Find basketball rims at most sporting goods stores.
-
4
Choose a net based on your preferences and the type of durability you prefer. You'll find a variety of net options at sporting goods stores. Standard nets are made of nylon; for a more durable option, choose a metal chain net.
-
5
Secure a ladder and attach your new rim to the existing backboard using the bolts provided and a wrench. Using measuring tape, double-check to ensure your rim is an appropriate height off the ground; standard basketball rims are positioned 10 feet from the ground.
-
6
Thread the net after you've installed the rim to the backboard by looping the wide end of the net through the hooks that hang from the bottom of your rim. Attaching the net before installing the rim will make bolting your rim to the backboard more difficult since the net will be in the way.
