How to Set Up a Basketball Net

Adding a basketball net to your home's driveway allows you to play basketball at any time without having to travel to a court. There are many brands of hoops available with varying styles from fixed to adjustable backboards, and matching variations in price tags. Any in-ground hoop requires the same foundation of a properly mounted and aligned pole, as a misaligned pole can lead to a rim that is not level.

      Dig a hole 1 foot in diameter and 30 inches deep where you want the pole positioned.

      Insert the pole into the hole.

      Mix the concrete and fill the hole around the pole.

      Use a level to ensure that the pole is positioned perfectly straight while the concrete dries.

      Attach the hoop, or rim, to the backboard, if necessary, from your kit of choice. While many fiberglass backboards come with rims attached, you may need to use bolts to secure a rim to a wooden backboard.

      Fasten the backboard section to the pole, according to the assembly instructions, but only after the pole has had a day to set in the concrete. Styles of backboard attachments range from a wider pipe, which fits over a narrow tip in the pole and is secured with pins or bolts, to designs that use a clamping mechanism to squeeze opposing sides of the pole and secure the hoop at the desired height. Standard height of a rim is 10 feet from the ground, but adjustable backboards allow you to position the rim at varying heights depending on the age and height of the user.

      Attach the netting to the rim, threading the top loops of the net through the metal attachments on the underside of the rim.
