The Height of a Basketball Goal

Basketball is a sport enjoyed by many around the world. Some enjoy watching it, others prefer playing it, and what better way to play it than in the comfort of your own backyard. But before you get started it may be helpful to know what height to adjust the goal to.

  1. Free-standing Goal

    • The standard height of a free-standing basketball goal is 10 feet. Children will find it difficult to play at this height, so the basketball goal can be lowered to suit them. In most cases, this has to be done when first assembling the free-standing goal.

    Portable Goal

    • The height range of a portable basketball goal ranges from 10 feet (regulation height) to 6 feet, 6 inches. This type of basketball goal may suit adults needing physical rehabilitation, children, people in wheelchairs or those with disabilities.

    Wall-Mounted Goal

    • A wall-mounted basketball goal is one that just contains the rim, net and backboard only. This basketball goal can be placed at any height, but some people prefer to hang it at regulation height. Normally, people attach a wall-mounted goal to a garage, tree or the side of their home.

    Tip

    • Purchase basketball goals at a department store, sporting goods store or online. When assembling a basketball goal, make sure the bolts or screws are securely in place. If the goal is loose, it can fall, resulting in serious injury.
