Ignore the dog and keep riding. Dogs instinctively give chase when they see a person or animal appearing to flee. If you ignore them, most dogs give up the chase quickly once you are out of their "territory."

    • 2

Speed up when approaching a dog. This extra push can get you by the dog before it has a chance to catch up.

    • 3

Carry a water bottle with a squirt cap and squirt the dog in the face. This will startle the dog and cause it to lose its momentum.

    • 4

Cross the street when you see a dog, if possible. If the dog is defending its territory, you can avoid a confrontation by giving it a wide berth.

    • 5

Talk to the dog. Say "Down!" or "Stay!" in a firm tone. If the dog has been trained, it may respond to commands.
