Instructions for How to Install Handlebar Wraps

Handlebar wraps deteriorate from simple use. Gaps appear between the individual wraps, and dirt and sweat leave muddy imprints. Wrapping a handlebar effectively relies on a steady application of technique and skill. Each end of the bar requires one roll of tape. Each roll includes a plug to secure the tape to the end of the bar.

Instructions

    • 1

Select one of the two roles of handlebar tape. Peel off the white strip on the backside, exposing the adhesive.

    • 2

Place one end of the tape, adhesive-side up, against one end of the handlebar. Orient the end of the tape so that it's facing the bicycle. Allow the edge of the tape to hang over the end of the handlebar.

    • 3

Pull the tape firmly. Gradually wind it up the handlebar, toward the base of the brake lever. Overlap each layer of tape so that the adhesive touches the bar.

    • 4

Push the brake lever hood forward, toward the front of the bicycle. Wind the tape up and around the base of the brake lever.

    • 5

Wrap the tape one more time around the base of the brake lever, covering any gaps between the tape.

    • 6

Pull the brake lever hood back to its original position. Check that there is no handlebar visible around the base of the hood. If there is, reroute the tape to cover the gap.

    • 7

Wind the tape over the top of the handlebar, moving gradually toward the stem at the center of the handlebar. If there is excess tape, increase the overlap along the area to offer additional padding for the hands.

    • 8

Determine the point along the handlebar where the wrap will end. Choose a point where the hands do not normally come in contact with the bar.

    • 9

Use a razor blade or scissors to cut the end of the tape to a point. Wrap a layer of plumber's or electrical tape around the cut to bind the handlebar tape to the handlebar.

    • 10

Push the end of the tape at the base of the handlebar into the bar-end. Press one of the handlebar plugs into the end behind the tape.
