How to Change the Skewer on a Huffy Cruiser

Huffy Cruiser bikes are a stylish way to get around. Their wide tires make them ideal for riding in sand, and their relaxed frame and seat make them a comfortable way to get around town. The bikes are easy to maintain, and most repairs can be done at home using common household tools. The skewers on most Huffy Cruiser models use hex nut fasteners instead of quick release arms. Changing the skewer on a Huffy Cruiser style bike simply requires a wrench.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the bicycle upside down so that it sits on the seat and handlebars. This will make working on the wheels easier and also stabilize the bike so that it stands on its own.

    • 2

Remove the wheel from the cruiser. Use a wrench to loosen the hex nuts on each end of the skewer. This is located in the center of the wheel. The skewer is the piece that runs horizontally through the hollow axle. Both the front and rear tires have skewers, and the process will be the same on both. You may have to move the chain free of the cassette when working on rear wheels.

    • 3

Remove a hex nut from one side of the skewer using the wrench if necessary. Grab the opposite hex nut and pull the skewer from the axle.

    • 4

Unscrew one end of the new skewer. Holding the hex nut that is still attached to the skewer, push the skewer through the axle. Reapply the free hex nut to the end of the skewer just enough so that it stays screwed onto the skewer.

    • 5

Replace the wheel back on to the bicycle. Push the wheel all the way into the drop-out, or the arm that holds the wheel in place. Screw both sides of the skewer's hex nuts evenly until the wheel is held snugly in place. Replace the chain onto the cassette if working on the rear wheel.

Check that the wheel rotates straight and freely.

Turn the hex nut a half turn alternating between the left and right ends of the skewer. Spin the wheel a full rotation after each turn to test the wheel for balance. If the wheel wobbles continue tightening until it is rotates straight and is held securely in place.
