How to Remove the Bottom Bracket in a Hollowtech II

Hollowtech II is Shimano's design of an integrated bottom bracket and crankset. Both pieces form integral parts of the bicycle's drive train. The Hollowtech II bottom bracket includes two bearing cups and a central sleeve through which the crank spindle passes. These may be removed for routine servicing or replacement. Before attempting to remove the bottom bracket, first remove the accompanying crankset. Using the right tools and know-how to remove these components prevents damaging bolts and other small parts.

Instructions

  1. Hollowtech II Crankset Removal

    • 1

      Use a 5 mm Allen key to loosen the two bolts at the end of the left crank. The left crank is not attached to the chain. The right crank is attached to the chain.

      Position the TL-FC16 tool against the cap in the middle of the left crank. The TL-FC16 tool has splines on one side that fit inside this cap.

      Turn the TL-FC16 tool counterclockwise. Continue to turn it until the crank cap comes loose. Remove the cap.

      Pull the left Hollowtech II crank away from the bicycle, disengaging it from the crank spindle.

      Pull the right Hollowtech II crank away from the bicycle.

    Hollowtech II Bottom Bracket Removal

      Attach the TL-FC32 tool around the left bottom bracket cup. There are left and right cups, corresponding with the left and right sides of the crank. Both cups are exposed with removal of the crank.

      Turn the TL-FC32 tool counterclockwise to loosen the left Hollowtech II bottom bracket cup. Remove the cup.

      Attach the TL-FC32 tool around the right bottom bracket cup.

      Turn the TL-FC32 tool counterclockwise to loosen the right bottom bracket cup. This cup features a reverse thread.

      Remove the right Hollowtech II bottom bracket cup along with the accompanying sleeve.
