1
Check your brakes before each time you ride your 10-speed Schwinn. If they feel as though they are not as responsive as they should be, turn the barrel adjusters counterclockwise. The adjusters are located on the levers and the brake arms.
-
2
Examine the chain before each ride. It should have plenty of lubrication, but only use bike chain lube, not WD-40, warns the manufacturer. If it is dry, place just a small drop of lube at the spot where each link meets the one next to it. Work the pedals backward to allow the lube to distribute throughout the chain and into the pins, and then swipe a rag over the chain briefly to remove excess lube.
-
3
Check the tires on your 10-speed Schwinn for proper inflation before every ride. Use a floor pump to inflate the tires to the pressure indicated on the side of the tire, such as 120 PSI, or pounds per square inch.
-
4
Tighten the bolts, if needed, every three months, and apply a thin layer of grease to the seat post.
-
5
Check the cogs, chain rings and brake pads about every three months, recommends the manufacturer. If they show signs of wear, take your bike to a shop and have the parts replaced.
-
6
Replace the chain twice yearly or take your bike to a bicycle shop to have a professional do it. Once yearly, have the cables and housing replaced. Replace any bearings that seem worn.
-
7
Wash your 10-speed Schwinn whenever it becomes dirty or grimy. Use either a cleaner intended for bicycles or a mild dish soap. Fill a bucket with the cleaner and water, dip a rag into it and clean off the road grit. Clean your gears and chain last because these will be greasy.
