How to Convert a Pedal Bike Into an Exercise Bike

Depending on where you live, such as in an urban area, pedal bikes may not be suitable for outdoor exercise. In order to turn a pedal bike into a stationary bike for exercise, you need a bike trainer--a stand that allows you to convert a pedal bike to a stationary one. These also allow you to adjust the resistance for use in working out.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the resistance unit to the bike stand according to the instructions for your particular brand. Flip the resistance unit toward the frame and attach the tension bolt.

    • 2

Mount the bike to the trainer frame. Hold the rear frame and seat the bike into the stay bars. Tighten the knobs to hold the bike in place, and make certain the rear wheel is centered over the resistance unit.

    • 3

Turn the knob on the resistance unit until it touches the tire. Turn the knob several more times to increase the resistance. Place the front wheel on the stand, if your trainer includes one.
