How to Use Clipless Bike Pedals

Clipless pedals are those in which you lock your feet using special cleats. This eliminates the need for the strappy, restraint-like clips you would use if you wanted to keep your feet secured to the pedals. Once the shoes are properly set up and you practice a bit, getting in and out of the pedal becomes second nature.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the cleats to the soles of the cycling shoes. Cycling shoes for use with clipless pedals come with predrilled holes for the cleat's screws. Place the cleat on the shoes following manufacturer instructions for exact placement. In general, however, you place the cleat directly under the ball of your foot and secure it with the screws provided. Ensure the shoes will accommodate the style of clipless pedal you want to use.

Put the shoe on. Skagit Cycle advises wearing special cycling socks as well, which are thin enough that they won't cause the snug cycling shoe to stretch out of shape.

    • 3

Place your foot on the pedal, generally toes first, and press your heel down. The cleat should click into place.

    • 4

Move your heel outward to release your shoe from the pedal.
